Agricultural Commodity Grader
For fresh fruits and vegetables and related products:
Inspects products to determine the quality, condition, and/or compliance with U.S. Grade Standards or stated contract specifications. Prepares inspection reports based on examination of product. Directly issues the certificates using the FEIRS software. Verbally explains inspection determinations to appropriate industry employees. For processed fruits and vegetables and related products:
Draws and examines representative samples of the finished products and conclusively determines grade, condition and wholesomeness in accordance with official grade standards, buyer-seller contracts or other written specifications. Makes observations to determine if plant facilities, operating methods, processing equipment and personnel are in compliance with SCI sanitation requirements and FDA regulations. Observes the raw product material to establish the suitability for processing and advises plan management of the results, and takes corrective action if necessary. Instructs inspectors, technicians and aids in proper grading and inspection techniques. When serving as Inspector-in-Charge at a processing plant, the incumbent coordinates activities, schedules and work assignments for other inspection personnel assigned to the plant. May monitor processing plant operations, product grade evaluation, and quality control procedures and provides technical assistance as necessary. For auditing assignments:
May conduct various Division audits, including audit verification of participating industry members based on program requirements. Audits may consist of quality systems, policies and activities (program and personnel), facility records and documentation and product. Prepares audit reports with guidance from a lead auditor. Performs audit evaluations in accordance with program requirements. Maintains reference material and answers questions on policy, procedures, standards, and auditing guidelines. Experience:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal service, performing the following duties:
1) independently grades and/or inspects fresh and processed fruits, vegetables and related products, including difficult assignments on rare or unusual products; 2) performing the full range of grading and/or inspection tasks involved in directly supplying grading services to producers or members of the trade; 3) inspecting products for compliance with all types of contract specifications and recognizes all but the extremely rare product defects or diseases; 4) making, explaining, and defending nearly all grade and/or inspection determinations, only rarely requiring technical assistance in borderline cases; and 5) inspecting and evaluating complicated processing equipment and procedures, and conditions of storage or transportation, such as is typical of most processed products production, and advises industry employees on product quality control procedures. Must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree in Agriculture, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Business, Science or related field; or two full years (36 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. (Must submit transcripts) OR Combination:
You must have a combination of work experience and education as described above which when combined equals to 100% of the requirement. First determine your qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level listed above; and then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only graduate education in excess of one year (i.e., 18 semester hours) may be combined with experience under this standard.
